Key takeaways

A good Shopify cart confirms the order, shows the full cost and leads straight to checkout. Choose a drawer or a page in your theme settings, show what shipping costs or how far the shopper is from free shipping, keep accelerated checkout buttons beside the checkout button and limit add-ons to a few relevant, hand-picked products. Shopify checks price-based free shipping against the cart value after discounts and before tax, so any progress message should use the same number.

  • The cart’s job is to confirm the order, show the full cost and lead to checkout.
  • Horizon offers a page or a drawer and Dawn adds a popup notification; choose by order size, and test if you’re unsure.
  • Price-based free shipping uses the cart value after discounts and before tax, so a progress message must use the same number.
  • Keep the discount field collapsed, and limit add-ons to a few relevant, hand-picked products.
  • Judge a cart change by reached-checkout rate and completed orders, against a baseline from after September 23, 2026.

What the cart has to do

By the time someone opens the cart, they’ve made their choices. The cart’s job is to confirm them, with the right items, variants and quantities, to show what the order will cost and to lead to checkout. Everything else in the cart competes with that job.

Cost is where carts lose people. In Baymard Institute’s survey of US online shoppers, once people who were just browsing are set aside, 40% of those who abandoned an order said extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees were too high, and 12% said they couldn’t see or calculate the total up front. In May 2026, Baymard advised showing the full order cost in the cart, or a clear estimate, and putting free-shipping status in the cart summary.

Drawer, page or pop-up

In Shopify’s free themes, the cart type is a setting under Theme settings > Cart. Horizon, the family of free themes Shopify launched in May 2025, offers a page or a drawer and ships with the drawer selected. Dawn offers a drawer, a page or a popup notification, which confirms the item without opening the full cart.

A drawer keeps shoppers on the page they were browsing; a page gives a large order, notes and messages more room. Neither Shopify nor Baymard has published evidence that one converts better in general, so choose by your orders: one or two items suit a drawer, and larger, more considered orders suit a page. If you can’t decide, test both.

Make free shipping add up

There are two ways to set a free-shipping threshold. Since March 2026, a shipping option can become free above a minimum order value, set under Settings > Shipping and delivery. Or you can create a free-shipping discount, automatic or with a code, with a minimum purchase amount.

They count differently. Price-based shipping options compare against the cart value after discounts and before taxes, so a discount code can move an order below your threshold. A free-shipping discount’s minimum counts product prices after any combinable discounts, never taxes, and includes gift cards in the cart. If you sell in other currencies, that minimum is set in your store’s currency and converted at checkout at the current exchange rate.

Neither Horizon nor Dawn includes a free-shipping progress bar, so a message like “Spend $12 more for free shipping” takes an app or custom theme code. Make it calculate from the same number Shopify uses, update as the cart changes and say plainly when the order qualifies. Don’t rely on a site-wide banner alone: in Baymard’s usability testing, up to 27% of users missed free shipping shown only in a banner or header.

Set the threshold from your own order data, a little above a common order value and with margin left after shipping, rather than copying another store’s number.

Keep the discount field from becoming an exit

An open discount-code field invites shoppers without a code to leave and look for one. Baymard has watched test participants do exactly that, and recommends hiding the field behind a link. Horizon’s cart keeps its discount field collapsed until the shopper opens it or a code is applied, and the Allow discounts in cart setting removes it. Dawn’s cart has no code field; codes go in at checkout.

Automatic discounts avoid the problem entirely, because nothing needs to be typed. Keep codes for promotions that depend on them, such as an influencer or email campaign.

Recommend a few things that belong

Shopify generates related-product recommendations automatically. Complementary ones, such as the case, the refill or the matching piece, are set by hand in the free Search & Discovery app, up to 10 per product. Shopify’s free themes show recommendations on product pages; putting them in the cart takes theme work or an app.

Be selective. In 2021, Baymard reported that 52% of desktop sites it benchmarked didn’t do enough to make cart cross-sells relevant, and in its testing a single questionable suggestion was enough for users to lose faith in all of them. One small add-on that completes the order earns its place; a carousel of bestsellers pulls attention away from checkout.

Bundles are the native alternative. Shopify Bundles, a free Shopify app available on all plans, sells fixed bundles and multipacks, so the offer is made on the product page rather than in the cart.

Keep the way to checkout obvious

The checkout button should be the clearest thing in the cart, with accelerated checkout buttons beside it, where Shopify’s developer guidance puts them. In the cart, themes can show every accelerated method you’ve turned on; product pages show only one.

Then check the cart on a phone. Line items, quantity controls, the total and the checkout button should be easy to reach, and a drawer should work with a keyboard and return focus to the page when it closes. Turn on the note field only if someone reads the notes.

Measure the cart, not just sales

In Shopify’s Conversion rate breakdown report, the cart sits between two steps: sessions with cart additions and sessions that reached checkout. A cart change should improve the second without hurting completed orders or average order value. Shopify changed how it measures sessions between September 21 and 23, 2026, so compare against a baseline from after that week.

For a fair comparison of a drawer against a page, run an A/B test. On the Grow plan or higher, Shopify’s Rollouts can test a theme change against your current theme.

A cart review checklist

  • Open the cart on a phone and check that items, variants, the total and the checkout button are easy to find.
  • Show shipping costs or free-shipping progress, calculated on the cart value after discounts.
  • Keep accelerated checkout buttons beside the checkout button.
  • Collapse or remove the discount field unless your promotions depend on codes.
  • Limit add-ons to a few hand-picked, in-stock products that complete the order.
  • Compare reached-checkout rate and completed orders before and after any change.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cart drawer better than a cart page on Shopify?

Neither Shopify nor Baymard Institute has published evidence that one converts better in general. Drawers suit quick orders of one or two items; pages suit larger orders that need notes or more room. On the Grow plan or higher, you can test the two with Shopify’s Rollouts.

How do I add a free-shipping progress bar to Shopify?

Shopify’s free themes don’t include one, so you need an app or custom theme code. Make it calculate from the cart value after discounts and before tax, which is what Shopify’s price-based shipping options use, and test it with a discount code applied.

Why did free shipping disappear after a customer used a discount code?

Price-based shipping options are checked against the cart value after discounts, so a code can take an order below your threshold. Adjust the threshold or the discount, or say so in the cart.

Can I show “frequently bought together” products without an app?

Partly. In the free Search & Discovery app you can choose up to 10 complementary products for each product, and themes with a complementary products block show them on product pages. Showing them in the cart takes theme work or an app.
