Key takeaways
Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts share your catalogue through Shopify Catalog with AI channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta and the Shop app, and they are active by default. For a store based in Canada they work mainly as discovery channels: ChatGPT requires that you sell to US customers, Copilot’s direct checkout appears only to US shoppers, and Google’s direct checkout needs a US-based store. Review Sales channels › Agentic, keep product data and store policies complete, and report these orders as their own channel.
- Agentic Storefronts are on by default and enrol your store in new AI channels automatically unless you change the setting.
- For a Canada-based store, AI checkout is largely a US-customer feature; treat the channels as discovery first.
- Direct checkouts skip parts of your stack: Google’s doesn’t fire Google Analytics or custom pixels, and several product types are unsupported.
- Blocking crawlers in robots.txt doesn’t stop Shopify Catalog from sharing product data with the channels you have active.
- Complete product information and published policies are the practical levers; files such as llms.txt don’t replace them.
What Shopify switched on
Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts in its Winter ’26 Edition in December 2025. The feature makes your products available through Shopify Catalog to AI channels, so an assistant can show them when a shopper asks for a recommendation. Shopify’s help centre lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and the Shop app as channels.
The default matters more than the announcement. The Agentic settings start with “Allow Shopify to manage for me” switched on. With that setting, every available channel can access your products and the store is automatically enrolled in the agentic channels Shopify adds later. If nobody on your team has opened this section, your catalogue is being shared on the default terms.
None of this needs a new app or a theme change. It is a channel decision, and like any channel it deserves an owner, a review and a measurement plan.
What each channel can do for a store in Canada
The channels differ in who can buy and where the purchase happens. Shopify’s help pages set out the conditions, and several of them depend on the United States.
| Channel | Where the purchase happens | Condition for a Canada-based store |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Your own Shopify checkout, opened inside ChatGPT or in a new tab | Your store must sell to customers in the United States; it can be based elsewhere |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout in Copilot, or a redirect to your storefront | Direct checkout is shown only to customers based in the United States |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout in Google, or your storefront | Direct checkout requires a store based in the United States that sells to US customers |
| Shop | The Shop app | Cannot be switched off from the Agentic settings |
Meta is also listed as a channel. Check its current conditions in your admin before relying on it, because each channel publishes its own rules.
Read the table as discovery first
A Canadian store that sells only to Canadians gets product discovery from these channels, not a new place to take payment. A store that also sells to the United States can receive orders, subject to each channel’s rules. Shopify’s help pages do not say whether shoppers in Canada see your products inside ChatGPT, so confirm it from your own orders rather than assuming it either way.
Google has said its newest checkout capabilities in Merchant Center are rolling out in the United States first, with Canada and Australia to follow early next year. Treat that as an announcement, not a launch date to plan revenue around.
If US customers matter to you, the channel question arrives together with the customs question. Duties, CUSMA origin and carrier choice decide whether an order from an AI channel is profitable, so settle them before you encourage cross-border orders.
Review the Agentic settings this week
Open Sales channels › Agentic in the Shopify admin. Access requires the store owner or staff with the Products › View and App and sales channel › Agentic permissions, so decide who that person is before anything else.
- Decide whether to keep “Allow Shopify to manage for me” on. With it on, new channels are added automatically; with it off, you choose Shopify Catalog access and checkout behaviour channel by channel.
- Check each channel’s direct checkout option where one exists. In Microsoft Copilot, turning direct checkout off keeps discovery but sends shoppers to your storefront to buy.
- Confirm your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy are published and current. The channels require them.
- Record every decision with a date. If you later turn off Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT, Shopify says it can take up to seven days before product data stops being shared.
Give agents product data they can quote
Shopify’s guidance for these channels is plain: focus on complete and well-structured product information in Shopify Catalog. An assistant answering “which gel pen suits a left-handed writer?” can only use what your product records actually say.
Start with the facts that decide a purchase in your category: dimensions, materials, compatibility, what is included, care and the real differences between variants. Keep titles literal and consistent across a range. Put important conditions in the description text rather than only in an image or a PDF. For ChatGPT, Shopify asks that relevant legal disclosures appear within the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
This is the same discipline that makes a product page convert and a product feed validate. The difference is that an error can now reach a checkout, not just an answer, so resolve contradictions between the product page, packaging and support replies before you expand the channels.
Know what the direct checkouts leave out
A direct checkout inside an AI channel is not your full checkout. Shopify’s Google help page states that Google Analytics and custom pixels won’t fire in Google AI Mode and Gemini’s direct checkout.
The same page lists what Google’s direct checkout does not support: subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products, as well as local delivery, in-store pickup and pickup points.
Write down what your normal checkout does that a direct checkout might skip: required fees, gift options, custom fields, post-purchase surveys and loyalty prompts. Then decide which products should only be bought on your storefront, and set each channel’s checkout option to match.
Blocking crawlers is not the same as opting out
robots.txt still matters for the open web, but Shopify is explicit about its limits here. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt or at the network layer affects only open-web discoverability; it does not stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to the channels you have active.
To keep a specific product out of AI channels, Shopify’s option is to set its status to Unlisted. That also removes it from sitemaps, from search engines such as Google and from your store’s own search, so it suits genuinely private items rather than products you merely want to de-emphasize. Shopify also notes it can’t control other ways your products might be listed.
Google has a separate control. The generative AI control in Search Console, rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026, manages your site’s inclusion in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. It doesn’t override your choices to participate in services such as Merchant Center and Google Ads.
Opting out has a cost: a product hidden from agents is hidden from the shoppers using them. Decide product by product, based on margin, fulfilment and customer-data requirements.
Where agents.md and llms.txt fit
Since May 2026, Shopify stores serve default files at /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, all pointing to the same generated content. You can replace them by adding agents.md.liquid, llms.txt.liquid or llms-full.txt.liquid templates to your theme.
These files describe your store to automated visitors; they do not carry your catalogue to the channels. Shopify Catalog does that. Google has also said its Search does not use llms.txt. If you customize the files, keep them short and accurate, give them an owner and update them when policies or ranges change. A stale file that contradicts your published policies is worse than the default.
Measure agent orders as their own channel
Report AI channels as named sales channels and referral sources, separately from organic search and paid social. Where a direct checkout skips your pixels, reconcile from Shopify’s order records rather than your analytics tool.
Keep expectations grounded. Adobe reported that traffic to US retail sites from generative AI tools rose 693.4% over the 2025 holiday season compared with the year before. That describes US retail traffic across many sites; it does not predict what your store will see. Track your own orders, average order value, returns and customer questions before investing heavily.
Mind your baselines. On September 21, 2026, Shopify changed how its analytics measures sessions to filter automated traffic more consistently. Sessions, conversion rate and related metrics may look different from that date, while orders, sales and customer counts are unchanged. Compare periods on either side of it with care.
A first review for the next thirty days
- Name an owner for Sales channels › Agentic and record the current settings.
- Decide channel by channel: discovery only, discovery with direct checkout, or off.
- Complete the product facts for your best-selling products first, starting with variants and what is included.
- Confirm published policies, shipping rules for US customers and your returns wording.
- List the checkout features that direct checkouts skip, and mark the products that should stay storefront-only.
- Start a monthly report of AI-channel orders, refunds and customer questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Shopify store already in ChatGPT?
If Agentic Storefronts is on and your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, ChatGPT can access them. Shopify’s ChatGPT channel requires that your store sells to customers in the United States, although the store itself can be based elsewhere. Check Sales channels › Agentic for the current status of your store.
Can shoppers in Canada check out inside these AI channels?
Microsoft Copilot’s direct checkout is shown only to customers based in the United States, and Google’s direct checkout requires a US-based store selling to US customers. In ChatGPT, buyers complete the purchase on your own Shopify checkout. For a store selling mainly in Canada, treat the channels as discovery for now.
Does Shopify charge a fee for sales through ChatGPT or Copilot?
Shopify’s help pages say there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT or through Microsoft Copilot’s direct checkout beyond your standard payment processing fees. Terms can change, so review the Agentic Storefronts terms in your admin before planning margins around it.
Will blocking AI bots in robots.txt remove my products from AI channels?
No. Shopify says robots.txt blocking affects open-web discoverability only and doesn’t stop Shopify Catalog from sharing product data with the channels you have active. Use the Agentic settings, or set specific products to Unlisted, knowing that also hides them from search engines and your store search.
